Today we opened up the Dilithium Exchange feature on the Tribble test servers. This is the final big piece of the Dilithium economy. (Read more on the economy)
To access the Dilithium Exchange, click on the little down arrow on the bottom right of the mini-map area. The first item in the menu is the Dilithium Exchange. Clicking this will open the exchange window. This window is divided into three tabs—Buy, Sell, and History.
On the Buy tab, you can place requests to buy Cryptic Points from other players in exchange for Dilithium. The screen shows you the prices that other people are currently selling Dilithium for. You can select one of these and then enter how much you want to buy, in which case you may be able to complete the transaction immediately. Or you can post a new offer at a different price. Posting a new offer is like making a bid on an auction. Your offer will complete automatically as soon as a selling player offers at your price.
On the Sell tab, you can place offers to sell Cryptic Points to other players in exchange for Dilithium. This screen shows you the prices in Dilithium that other people are currently offering to buy Cryptic Points at. Once again, you can select one of the offers and possibly complete the transaction immediately, or you can post a new offer at a different price. Your offer will complete automatically as soon as a buying player offers at your price.
For both buying and selling Cryptic Points, offers are made in terms of how much Dilithium will be exchanged for each Cryptic Point. When you place the offer, the specified amount is deposited in the exchange. For example, when you offer to sell 400 Cryptic Points at 195 Dilithium each, the 400 Cryptic Points will be removed from your balance and be deposited into the exchange. If you instead offered to buy 120 Cryptic Points at 203 Dilithium each, 24,360 Dilithium would be removed from your current character and deposited in the exchange.
It takes a little experimenting to get used to how the user interface works, so be sure to read the display before you place an offer. We think the screens are clear, but math is involved, so it is easy to have the result not match what you are expecting if you don’t re-read the numbers after you make changes. We will continue working on improving the UI in future builds.
When offers are completed, the Cryptic Points and Dilithium you earn are not automatically added to your account or character, respectively. Your balance is left in the exchange until you claim the currency. So be sure to check back to find out what has happened to your offers.
Your set of open buy and sell offers are shown on the upper right of the two offer screens. The History tab of the exchange is where you need to look to understand what happens when you are offline. This screen will let you look at what offers you have made, when they were completed, and how much was added or removed from your deposits in the exchange.
Offers may be partially completed. For example, if you offered to sell 400 Cryptic Points to other players on Sunday, you may log in on Monday to find out that 300 of those points have been purchased so far, and that 100 points remain. You can cancel an offer at any time and be refunded any remaining Cryptic Points or Dilithium. Refunded currency is left in the exchange until you claim it.
In future builds, offers will expire after 14 days if they have not been completed. An expired offer behaves exactly like a canceled offer, by refunding currency to your exchange balance, where you can claim it.
The exchange has limits on how much Dilithium you can enter as the price per Cryptic Point. The initial limits are between 50 and 500 Dilithium per Cryptic Point when posting a sell or buy offer. These limits are in place to avoid unexpected swings in the economy. We plan to adjust this range over time as we learn what range works well with the community as a fair rate of exchange. Since Tribble is a much smaller economy than Holodeck, the rate of exchange will likely vary wildly, and there will likely be times where there are no reasonably priced buy or sell offers available. If you don’t like the current offers, then make your own!
Since Tribble is a closed economy, the exchange on Tribble will not involve actual Cryptic Points. All exchanges will actually be for Test Points, even though the user interface says Cryptic Points. Exchange of actual Cryptic Points will not take effect until this feature is live on Holodeck.
Once the feature is live on Holodeck, you should be aware that Cryptic Points that are deposited into the exchange as part of an offer, or which are purchased via the exchange, are converted internally into STO-only Cryptic Points that we refer to as Star Trek Points. These points can only be used within STO, and they work just like other promotional Cryptic Points or stipend Cryptic Points. You cannot spend these points in other Cryptic games, such as Champions Online.
The Dilithium Exchange an exciting feature for us, as it opens up the ability for players to self-determine an exchange rate for Dilithium and Cryptic Points.
